What's On at the 'Gong
Choir students celebrated their commitment to the choir this year and their stellar performance with a party on Friday 14 August. There was a fabulous cake and all of the students received their ribbon for participating in the Wollongong Schools’ Choral Festival.
Name our Vege Garden
Congratulations to Levi who won the Green Team 'Name our Vegetable Garden competition.
The new name of our vegetable garden is 'Greens and Seeds Community Garden'. Levi won some gardening tools, a herb kit and a strawberry growing kit for all his efforts.
Well done, Levi.
Life Education Van Learning
Students from all classes attended the Life Education Van between 18 & 22 August. There was a wide range of learning across the stages in the areas of Personal Development and Health, both important elements of the PD/H/PE syllabus. We would like to thank the P & C for enabling all students at our school to attend the van.
For the past term and a half we have been attending a learning program called Uni4Certain at Cringila Public School. This program provides an opportunity for Year 6 children to meet new students from different schools, and extend our knowledge in different areas.
At the beginning of this program we started writing a storybook for kindergarten students on iBooks Author. We formed groups and chose a book to make into a movie. All the groups then wrote a script and chose characters. After we wrote the script we filmed our movie with iPads or with a camera and green screen. We then edited our film on iMovie.
We have now started to learn about the earth’s atmosphere and sustainability. Our focus is on building a sustainable house and efficient ways of generating electricity. We have also conducted experiments to generate electricity from lemons and potatoes.

Education Week Display
We celebrated Education Week with an assembly on Friday 31 July. Family members, students and staff listened to students share about their local hero, the choir sang and everyone got to see the local hero projects on display around the hall and on the big screen. Thank you to everyone who made this a great finish to Education Week.
National Tree Day
The Green Team celebrated National Tree Day this year by inviting all interested WWPS students to help begin planting the Bush Tucker Garden. We have continued this planting process over the past two weeks with help from Mrs Reade, Mrs Farmer and the parents who volunteer their time to the Garden Club. The area is looking amazing! If anybody in the WWPS community (parents/ grandparents etc) would like to donate their time to help maintain our gardens, the Garden Club and Green Team meet every Thursday at 1.30pm in the vegetable garden.
Choir Wows Audience at Choral Festival
On Wednesday 29 July Wollongong West Public School’s Choir attended the Choral Festival at Wollongong Town Hall.
The festival began at 7.30pm with a beautiful Aboriginal version of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and also paid tribute to the ANZACs with a very moving ‘Anzac Medley’. We sang many beautiful and fun songs together.
We were also excited to perform our individual songs which were ‘Rain’ and ‘We Are Done’. We felt like we were on ‘The Voice’ as the spotlight illuminated us on the stage and we performed. It was amazing!
It was a spectacular night for the massed choir and the audience and we congratulate the choir teachers for all the effort they put into the Choral Festival. It was an exciting night that we will always remember!
Win and Ghala – Choir members
On 29 July, we were lucky enough to be chosen as two of the 8 students to attend the Children’s Book Council of Australia Literary Lunch at the Fraternity Club. When we arrived, we went inside and found our table. There were about 16 other schools there. Each of us had an author or illustrator at our table. At our table we had Oliver Phommavanh, who was very funny.
We then had time to get autographs from all the other authors and illustrators who were there. The most popular ones were Jacqueline Harvey and Tony Flowers. Then all of the authors/illustrators presented a 3 minute speech to tell us about themselves, their books and their inspiration for writing.
After the speeches we went and got some more autographs and then we were called back to have lunch, which was terrific. Sophie really enjoyed the mini sausage rolls, but we both ate some fruit as well.
After lunch we had a workshop with Jacqueline Harvey. She told us all of her embarrassing stories from when she was younger and how these things can be good writing material. She also shared with us her tips and tricks for writing books and also answered some questions. It was a fantastic day! Thank you to Mrs Reade for driving us there and to Mrs Owen for organising it and taking us there.

Caring for Teeth with Tanya
1M went to the hall to see Tanya who talked to us about our teeth. She brought her teeth mirror. She used it to have a look at people’s teeth.
Yesterday, Wednesday 15 July, we had a visit from Tanya. Tanya taught us how to look after our teeth. She taught us bacteria live in our plaque. If we don’t look after our teeth the bacteria eats holes in them.
Year 6 Toy Sale
On Thursday the 25th June, Year 6 had a Toy Sale to raise money for the year 6 shirts.
During the toy sale, we received many interesting toys. With the help of some wonderful year 6 parents, the toys were displayed on the benches and all the children rushed to buy toys varying in price from 50c up to $5.
It was a very successful sale as most of the toys were sold out. It was a fantastic day and our thanks go to Sharon Cleary for organising the wonderful toy sale. Thanks also go to the year 6 people who assisted with selling the toys.

Ladies in the Muslim community joined some staff members at an Eid-al-Fitr celebration on Thursday 23 July. This was to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The event was celebrated with Arabic coffee (quite a flavour sensation), food, and dancing. It is hoped that later in the year our whole school community will get together for a cultural celebration of food, conversation and dancing.
Painting Working Bee
The P & C and volunteers had a lovely morning on Sunday 21 June. There was a mix of painting of the snake and hopscotch games and completing the Memorial Garden around the flagpole. Both tasks were completed with assistance from parents, teachers and students. Thank you P & C for organising the working bee and to all the volunteers who came along and helped.
Choir Cluster Rehearsal
Imagine a day full of fun and singing, well that’s what we experienced. On Wednesday 17 June the choir set off on a bus to Corrimal East PS. From the second we got off the bus, we were all excited to start singing.
Our first song was ‘Live Louder’ which got us wide awake. Then after singing a few songs we had a short lunch break. We then got seated quickly to start singing again, but instead of singing together we split into firsts and seconds.
A couple of songs had solo’s and from our school Matilda and Lisa tried out and did a fabulous job. Matilda
got the solo for ‘Listen to the Music’ – she has a beautiful voice.
After recess we did some more singing but then unfortunately we had to come back to school. So I recommend being a part of choir next year
