Student Leadership Day
On Wednesday 12 November students in 5C and 6H went to Figtree Community Hall for a Leadership Day. They took part in activities to help them understand what it means to be a leader and what skills they would need for the job. The day also included practical activities that required students to work as a team.
Students’ thoughts after the day:
“I’ve become more confident to do scary things.”
“I thought the day would be boring and lame, one big lecture but it was awesome.“
“I learnt to work better with others and cooperate.”
“I learnt how to work in a group with people I don’t usually work with.”
“It was fun because we played lots of games.”
“I liked the activities outside when we had to work as a team.”
“I learnt that if you don’t usually talk to someone, you should try to.”
“I’ve learnt that being a leader is extremely hard work.”
“We could interact with the year 5 kids and tell them about being a role model.”
“We had to cooperate and use team work.”
“I learnt that you can’t do everything by yourself. Sometimes you have to work in a team.”
“We had pizza for lunch- yum”
“It was fun and great to do something different”
"My favourite game was magic cardboard”
“The day was great”
2015 Leader Speeches
The first phase of the student leader process began on Tuesday morning, 18 November, with the leader speeches. All Year 5 students who felt they met the criteria prepared speeches to present to the school. This was a nerve racking process, but all of the speakers can be very proud of their efforts. Secret ballot voting will be held later this week with the leaders announced at the Presentation Assembly.

Oh, Happy Day
On 18 September, year 1 and 2 children went on an excursion. It was at the Wollongong Art Gallery, McDonlalds and a park near the beach. We went on a blue bus.
First we looked around in the Art Gallery and we counted how many pictures we could find with trees in them because we were going to make an artwork that was a forest. The first thing we did was that we got some ink from a staff member whose name was Julie. When she put four dots of red ink on our piece of paper we then started to blow the ink. It went all the way to the top. I really loved doing that and in fact, it is fun. After, we used long string for other branches and trees. Then we did the leaves with one finger.
After recess we went to a big, big room with lots of art. It was a hexagon room. My favourite thing there was the harbour bridge with lots of shells on it and sponge everywhere. The shells were on top of the sponge.

P & C Working Bee
A huge thank you to all the parents and children who attended the P&C working bee last Sunday. It was a glorious day and the areas that were worked on look beautiful. The garden on the hill next to the hall is looking much better with new plants and less weeks, and the huge area of garden in the bottom playground has all been trimmed and weeded and mulched. It is amazing how different it looks. The parents and children who worked on these gardens should feel very proud with their results. Thank you especially to Nigel and Wayne for all their hard work.
K-2 Grandparent's Afternoon
On Friday afternoon, 24 October Wollongong West PS will celebrate Grandparents Day. Grandparents, or relatives, are invited to come and spend the afternoon with their grandchildren. At 1.20pm they can join their children on the bottom oval for a picnic recess. Picnics and picnic blankets can be brought to school and enjoyed together. The canteen will also have some goodies for sale if you would like to buy something. After recess the children in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will entertain the grandparents in the hall. Grandparents are special people in our lives and this is a time to recognise the love and time they provide for their grandchildren. All grandparents are invites to share this afternoon with their grandchildren.
The next assembly for 2014 will be held on Wednesday 26 November. The class item will be by 1M. The leaders for this assembly will be Henry and Hollie. Parents, carers and family members are always very welcome to attend our assemblies.
