What's On at the 'Gong
Last Friday, 29 August, nine beautifully behaved students from our school were very fortunate to go along to see Southern Stars, ‘We Believe’. The show explored a child’s journey from believing in magic and fairy tales, teenage years to an adulthood that loves humanity, society and the global community.
The spectacular show included singing, dancing, drama, along with circus acrobatics and a very talented orchestra.
We were very proud of Zayden who played an important role as one of the main vocalists.
Surf Sense and Safety
On Thursday 21 August students in Years 2, 4 and 6 participated in the Surf Lifesavers Surf Sense lectures. Students learned about how to stay safe when at the beach, a very important lesson as Spring and Summer approaches.
Book Week Displays
In addition to the Book Fair, Book Character Parade and the Illustrator Visit, each class chose a shortlisted book and developed a special display for the library. If you didn’t get a chance to see them last week, come in and visit the library on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to see the impressive work that classes have done.
Jump Rope For Heart
There were some very excited students on Tuesday 26 August when the Jump Rope for Heart prizes were given out. Students can be very proud of their achievement in raising much needed funds for cancer research
Wakakirri performers had a great time at the party on Tuesday 26 August. It was a great way to wrap up Wakakirri for 2014. Students were presented with their certificates after all the food and drink was consumed.
Wakakirri - 2014
Congratulations to Miss Calligaro and the students who participated in this year’s amazing Wakakirri performance on Wednesday night at the WEC. The performance was the culmination of months of work for Miss Calligaro, the students and parent helpers.
This year’s theme was ‘Living the Dream’ and I know everyone involved will remember this special night for years to come.
The student’s behaviour was exemplary as we expect from our students, with our staff receiving congratulations on the way they conducted themselves during the day rehearsal and into the evening.
We are very lucky to have a teacher of Miss Calligaro’s calibre, who has given up so much of her time to coordinate all aspects of the performance. Students have been taking part in before school rehearsals four mornings per week for 2 terms, under Miss Calligaro’s supervision. Some students also volunteered to choreograph and have given up more than one morning each week to help out.
It was very wet weather on Monday 18 August, but the brave students and staff of Wollongong West were still able to dress up for the Book Week Parade. Captain Cook (Mrs Estherby, the Librarian) announced the Children's Book Council Book winning books and interviewed our students
and staff characters before they walked around the audience.
Our Book Fair was a great success with over $800 of book sales. We are very thankful to the families who donated books for our library and they should be ready to be borrowed by students next week.
Author Visit - Tom Jellett
On Tuesday 19 August we celebrated Book Week with another activity – an author visit. Tom Jellett came and spoke to students from Years 2 – 6. Here are some of the students’ comments:
Tom Jellett is a good illustrator and showed me that making books is not easy. Lochlan, 3/4F
I enjoyed Tom Jellett’s talk because he drew lots of funny pictures, especially the penguin (his publisher). Zane S, 3/4F
Tom Jellett was really funny. Most of his pictures had really long noses, especially the Penguin. Alexandra, 3/4FI liked the way he drew funny pictures and the way he thought about what he was doing. Mali, 3/4F
The Central Wollongong District Athletics carnival was held in Week 4 at Kerrin McCann stadium. We had 40 children compete over the 2 days and they all made Miss Calligaro and Mrs Hickey very proud. Congratulations to Charlie who came 1st in the discus for the second year running. She is off to Canberra on Friday 22
August to represent the district at the regional carnival. We wish her the best of luck.
I would also like to thank myYear 6 students who helped
out. As the carnival convenor I was very grateful for their help on both days as they ran messages, raked long jump pits and carried equipment.
Stage 3 Science Fair
Students in 5C and 6H took part in the Stage 3 Science Fair last Thursday (7 August) in the school hall. Students have been working on group investigations at school and at home for many weeks. The finalists will be submitting their presentations in the University of Wollongong Illawarra Coal Science Fair on 5 November.
Congratulations to the following students who were the successful finalists:
5C – Bryce, Rhys, Rachel, Joanna, Sophie, Claudia, Sonia, Eriks, Jayden, Zac, Cooper, Henry and Ryan
6H – Tamasin, Milly, Razan, Tilly, Charlie, Tearne, Rubie, Marlee, Tahlia, Nikola, Aedan and Jaryd.
On Tuesday 12 August the choir students for 2014, along with Mrs Morrissey and Miss Calligaro, celebrated their Choral Festival achievements with a party and cake. They each received a ribbon to commemorate their participation in the 60th year of the festival, shared in the great party food and had a slice (or 2) of the very yummy cake. Congratulations and well done to you all.
Science Enrichment Group
This term we have six students attending the Science Enrichment program at WHSPA every Tuesday afternoon. Yesterday, 12 August, the students were making electromagnets and then recording how many paperclips it could hold with different numbers of coils around the bar. It was very interesting watching the students make the circuit so that the electricity would travel through it and then getting the electromagnet to work.
The next assembly for 2014 will be held on Wednesday 17 September. The class item will be by 3/4F. The leaders for this assembly will be Chelsea and Jackson. Parents, carers and family members are always very welcome to attend our assemblies.
Please remember to send in items for the Halloween Carnival – packets of wrapped chocolates, novelty toys, etc. Parents, if you have a concern about anything at school, please talk to the class teacher if it is a class concern, or the principal for anything else. Talking about your concerns out in the playground doesn’t get anything solved. You need to speak to a member of staff.
