All students K – 6 are expected to participate in swimming lessons. This is an important part of the PDHPE syllabus and we are very fortunate to have a pool at our school to cover the swimming element of the KLA for all students. Swimming lessons are on every Thursday this term for all classes except 4/5W who have their lesson on a Tuesday. Students need their swimmers, towel and goggles (if they use them). Also, long hair must be tied back.

Outdoor BBQ Area
Plans are now in motion for the concreting of the outdoor BBQ area. This is a major project for the P & C. We received the picnic tables some time ago and once the concrete is poured the P & C will be working towards getting a roof designed and installed. The new outdoor kitchen/BBQ that we have will then be installed.
The reo arrived last Friday morning and the concreting is planned for this Friday, 23 October. This area of the playground will be out of bounds to everyone until the concrete has properly dried.
NRMA Science Road Safety Show
Last Wednesday The NRMA Science Road Safety Show visited out school. All the children spent an informative, entertaining hour learning about road safety and bike safety. A very interesting two finger rule was given to all the children regarding the correct fit of their bike helmet. Please ask your children about this and ensure their bike helmet fits correctly.
Throughout Terms 2 & 3 Joanna and Eriks have been spending each Thursday at Cringila PS with students from other schools in the area. They have worked on a number of projects during this time, have made friends from other schools, would recommend the program to everyone and are keen to continue their education after high school by going to university.
The celebration on Thursday 17 September included a showcase of the work the students have done, presentation of certificates to all the participants and a lovely lunch that was shared with their parents and other invited guests.
P & C Working Bee
Premier’s Spelling Bee
Twelve student competed for places in the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Final on Monday 31 August. As a result of this competition our Junior representatives were Neeron and Arshia and the Senior representatives were Henry and Joel. Unfortunately Henry was unable to compete at the regional final and Emma M took his place. At the regional final on Monday 14 September, our best result was 7th in the Junior final for Neeron. Congratulations to you all for your efforts. Keep working on being great spellers.
This year was the first year our school has participated in Southern Stars. Southern Stars is when a variety of schools come together to sing, dance and act. We had 19 students in Stage 3 who participated in Southern Stars. There were many rehearsals that we had to attend. For each performance we did four outstanding performances, including one to celebrate 100 years of ANZAC.
Our students worked very hard to correctly perform some challenging choreography and gave up many of their recess and lunch breaks. The performances were held over two days, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August with a matinee and evening performance both days. The schools’ matinee was sold out and this year they sold the most tickets ever!
The performance days were very intense and fun. It was an amazing experience that the rest of the school will hopefully enjoy in the future. We would like to thank Miss Main and Miss Calligaro for helping us rehearse the dances, as well as the parents for transporting the children and helping to make our costumes. We had an awesome time!

Choir students celebrated their commitment to the choir this year and their stellar performance with a party on Friday 14 August. There was a fabulous cake and all of the students received their ribbon for participating in the Wollongong Schools’ Choral Festival.
Name our Vege Garden
Congratulations to Levi who won the Green Team 'Name our Vegetable Garden competition.
The new name of our vegetable garden is 'Greens and Seeds Community Garden'. Levi won some gardening tools, a herb kit and a strawberry growing kit for all his efforts.
Well done, Levi.
Life Education Van Learning
Students from all classes attended the Life Education Van between 18 & 22 August. There was a wide range of learning across the stages in the areas of Personal Development and Health, both important elements of the PD/H/PE syllabus. We would like to thank the P & C for enabling all students at our school to attend the van.
For the past term and a half we have been attending a learning program called Uni4Certain at Cringila Public School. This program provides an opportunity for Year 6 children to meet new students from different schools, and extend our knowledge in different areas.
At the beginning of this program we started writing a storybook for kindergarten students on iBooks Author. We formed groups and chose a book to make into a movie. All the groups then wrote a script and chose characters. After we wrote the script we filmed our movie with iPads or with a camera and green screen. We then edited our film on iMovie.
We have now started to learn about the earth’s atmosphere and sustainability. Our focus is on building a sustainable house and efficient ways of generating electricity. We have also conducted experiments to generate electricity from lemons and potatoes.

Education Week Display
We celebrated Education Week with an assembly on Friday 31 July. Family members, students and staff listened to students share about their local hero, the choir sang and everyone got to see the local hero projects on display around the hall and on the big screen. Thank you to everyone who made this a great finish to Education Week.
National Tree Day
The Green Team celebrated National Tree Day this year by inviting all interested WWPS students to help begin planting the Bush Tucker Garden. We have continued this planting process over the past two weeks with help from Mrs Reade, Mrs Farmer and the parents who volunteer their time to the Garden Club. The area is looking amazing! If anybody in the WWPS community (parents/ grandparents etc) would like to donate their time to help maintain our gardens, the Garden Club and Green Team meet every Thursday at 1.30pm in the vegetable garden.
Choir Wows Audience at Choral Festival
On Wednesday 29 July Wollongong West Public School’s Choir attended the Choral Festival at Wollongong Town Hall.
The festival began at 7.30pm with a beautiful Aboriginal version of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and also paid tribute to the ANZACs with a very moving ‘Anzac Medley’. We sang many beautiful and fun songs together.
We were also excited to perform our individual songs which were ‘Rain’ and ‘We Are Done’. We felt like we were on ‘The Voice’ as the spotlight illuminated us on the stage and we performed. It was amazing!
It was a spectacular night for the massed choir and the audience and we congratulate the choir teachers for all the effort they put into the Choral Festival. It was an exciting night that we will always remember!

Annual School Surveys
Each year, as part of our planning process, we ask teachers, parents and students their opinions on a number of topics. Please click on the following link to be directed to Our Surveys page
Every year the office staff update any changes of family information - address, phone numbers, family situations, work status. It is very important that family information is always up to date in case the school needs to contact you about your child. If any of your details have changed recently, please write them down and send them to the office as soon as possible.
If any family is moving from the area over the holiday period and not returning to the school could you please advise the office as soon as possible.
It is vital that students have a change of clothes in their schoolbags. Unfortunately the school does not carry spare clothes. This is especially important during the swimming terms as children need a change of underwear etc.
Breakfast Club is now open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8.30am to 9.00am in the art room.
Please be aware that the school does not have the facility to offer change. If paying for uniforms, textbooks and excursions could you please ensure the correct money is given.
Please ensure you take note of the due date for all excursions and notes. It is vital that all monies need to be collected and unfortunately if not received, the student will not be able to attend.
Star of the Week
Last Friday, 21 August, Emily H competed at the Regional Athletics Carnival in Canberra. She was competing in the 9yrs girls 100m. She came second in her heat and went into
the final. Emily finished 7th in the final, which means that she is the 7th fastest 9yrs girl in the whole of the South Coast PSSA area. Congratulations and well done, Emily.
