P & C Working Bee
A huge thank you to all the parents and children who attended the P&C working bee last Sunday. It was a glorious day and the areas that were worked on look beautiful. The garden on the hill next to the hall is looking much better with new plants and less weeks, and the huge area of garden in the bottom playground has all been trimmed and weeded and mulched. It is amazing how different it looks. The parents and children who worked on these gardens should feel very proud with their results. Thank you especially to Nigel and Wayne for all their hard work.
K-2 Grandparent's Afternoon
On Friday afternoon, 24 October Wollongong West PS will celebrate Grandparents Day. Grandparents, or relatives, are invited to come and spend the afternoon with their grandchildren. At 1.20pm they can join their children on the bottom oval for a picnic recess. Picnics and picnic blankets can be brought to school and enjoyed together. The canteen will also have some goodies for sale if you would like to buy something. After recess the children in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will entertain the grandparents in the hall. Grandparents are special people in our lives and this is a time to recognise the love and time they provide for their grandchildren. All grandparents are invites to share this afternoon with their grandchildren.

Skoolbag App Update
The following information has been sent from Team Skoolbag regarding the Skoolbag App:
Just a note to let you know that with Apples latest iOS 8 update they have managed to break various functions in the Skoolbag app. We are aware of these issues including push notifications not working, and to rectifythis we are currently updating the apps with a new version. Please note that the issue does not effect users who are still running iOS 7. You can expect the update will be ready for download within the next 2 - 4 weeks.
On Thursday 18 September 25 students from our school were presented with BMX bikes through a special program arranged by Pinnacle Team Events. The students and their families were very excited to receive the bikes and helmets. We would like to thank Pinnacle Team Events and the Alliance Wines team who donated the bikes.
Earlier in Term 3 we were given a box full of bulbs from Bunnings. A small group of students assisted Mrs Reade to plant them all in the vegetable garden area and they have put on quite a show. We have dutch iris, tulips and a wide variety of daffodils. We would like to thank Bunnings for their donation. Hopefully the bulbs will give us a lot of colour in spring for years to come!
On the 10th of September 2 teams of 3 set off to enter a chess competition at TIGS (The Illawarra Grammar School). We left at 9am then all walked down to TIGS where we signed in. We played 6 rounds of chess each but we had small breaks in between. It was like a round robin of chess. Wollongong West A had a total score of 10 and a half and West Wollongong B had a total of 7 and half. At the end of the day we left and returned to school. We all had fun.

WOWW Trivia Reward
Last Friday, 12 September, we achieved our third PBS award by gaining three thousand WOWW tickets. The reward was a Trivia Competition. There were 20 groups made up of kids from K-6. Some questions were hard and some were easy, eg How many stepsisters does Cinderella have? Group 4 won the competition and received a certificate with their names on it. Everyone enjoyed the game and had fun. Thank you Miss Calligaro and the SRC for organising the reward.

On Friday 12 September the Wollongong Hawks came to visit and showed 5C and 6H how to play basketball. There were two players, one teaching and the other demonstrating. They showed children dribbling and other tricks which were spinning basketballs on your finger, dribbling between your legs and dribbling that looked like bigfoot plus many, many more skills. The visit from the Wollongong Hawks was awesome.

The next meeting will be held in November and I’ll communicate the specific date in future editions of the school newsletter.
I’d also like to thank Lisa for coordinating the Father’s Day Stall and the volunteers who helped with the set-up and sales on Thursday and Friday.

School planning process - Mrs Reade provided an overview of the school planning process and highlighted the opportunity for parents and carers to join the ‘school planning team’. If you are interested in joining the team, please send your details to Mrs Reade before term 3 ends and she will communicate the next steps. During the P&C meeting, Mrs Reade facilitated a workshop where the members worked in teams to draft key priorities for the school vision statement. Earlier, a similar exercise had taken place with the school staff and it was great to see that both draft statements were very aligned.
Fundraising & Volunteering - October Working Bee - following the success of the July working bee the P&C are organising the next working bee for Sunday October 12. This will be a great opportunity to continue improving the school grounds and meet other parents, carers and teachers on the day. A sausage sizzle lunch will be provided and you never know, Mr Whippy may even make another guest appearance. If you’re available to volunteer on the day, please email your details to email@example.com, or contact any member of the P&C executive committee.
